Woodland tulip (Tulipa sylvestris)

The wild original — a European species grown in Danish manor parks for centuries. Nodding buds open into fragrant, starry butter-yellow flowers. Unusually shade-tolerant, it naturalises in lawns and under deciduous trees, slowly forming colonies. Early nectar for bees. Plant 10–12 cm deep in autumn; mow only after foliage dies down.
