A little gem of a species tulip from the Aegean islands: delicate lilac blooms with a radiant golden-yellow centre, opening to the sun like small stars. Only about 20 cm tall, it naturalises willingly in a sunny well-drained spot, forming carpets over the years, and its open flowers feed bees in April. Plant 10 cm deep, 8 cm apart, and leave undisturbed.

Plant the bulbs in autumn (September–November) before the frost arrives. Set them pointy end up in well-drained soil — as a rule of thumb 2-3 times the bulb's height deep. Water after planting, then let nature do the rest. After flowering, let the foliage die down completely before removing it so the bulb can recharge for next year.
